Our Story
In the summer of 2020, my 10-year-old female Yorkipoo, Kenny, was diagnosed with diabetes. The diagnosis was shocking, as Kenny had long been a healthy dog. Hearing the diabetes diagnosis at the veterinarian's office was overwhelming. It wasn't until I returned home and read about canine diabetes and looked at the needles and insulin the veterinarian gave me that the reality of the diagnosis began to set in.
Kenny was sick and needed me. Together, we embarked on a new journey. I was prepared to do anything to save my sweet girl. The first day of insulin injections was a breeze. Unfortunately, I later realized the first injection was only successful because Kenny didn't understand what had occurred. The following days became more challenging. Kenny would run away, wiggle, and squirm. Day after day and injection after injection, I had to develop new methods and ways to capture Kenny's attention to administer the injection.
The situation had us both stressed. I called the veterinarian's office for help. I asked the veterinarian if she had any helpful tips or recommendations for administering the insulin injections. I mentioned the stress of the experience for both Kenny and me. The doctor replied simply. Saying, "Get creative." And just like that, the conversation was over. I felt defeated. The insulin injection for Kenny meant life or death. I needed to make something work. I needed to lessen the stress of the experience for us both. I got to work searching the internet for anything that would help us. I found nothing. The wheels started turning in my head. Searching for ideas and concepts that could work. That weekend, I had a plan and went to multiple stores looking for needed supplies.
Once home, I put together my apparatus. The first day was a success. The second day was a breeze, and day three was another success. We were onto something! This worked! We found the answer! I was ecstatic! We both were no longer stressed. I proudly took pictures of my newly built apparatus and happily shared the images with my client the following day at work. She was so impressed with this, and she told me I should make this available for others who required some support with their pets.
